Professional engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health. Safe design and safe operation of engineering works not only prevents injury due to accidents but also increases productivity. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of the organisation. Engineers in the construction industry can help prevent accidents by providing safe designs for construction projects with due consideration for safety in the construction phase and a regular maintenance programme for after. To enable engineers to fulfil these duties, they need to possess knowledge of safety and health that is seldom included in the formal curriculum of engineering programmes. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers recognises this situation and jointly organises safety training courses with the Occupational Safety & Health Council for all graduate engineers.
