Professional engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health. Safe design and safe operation of engineering works not only prevents accidents but also increases productivity. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of the organisation. Engineers have the responsibility for safe operation and maintenance of the plant and equipment during production through safety management system. To enable engineers to fulfil these duties, they need to possess knowledge of safety and health that is seldom included in formal curriculum during their engineering education. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers recognises this situation and jointly organises safety training courses with the Occupational Safety & Health Council for all graduate engineers.
